This 4 hour online course will introduce you to basic concepts that are required to understand Māori health. You’ll learn about:

  • Traditional and contemporary Māori society
  • The context that led to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and what the Treaty of Waitangi includes
  • The process of colonisation and how this relates to Māori health
  • The concept of equity and the relationship to Indigenous rights
  • The difference betwen cultural competency and cultural safety
  • Racism as a determinant of health and how you can be anti-racist.

What's Included In The Course...

MODULE 1

Māori Culture and Society

It’s hard to understand Māori health if you have no knowledge on what it means to be Māori. This module provides you with basic information on Māori society and common cultural values. Advice on how you can introduce yourself using the Māori ‘pepeha’ framework is shared. In this module you will cover:

  • Traditional Māori society
  • Contemporary Māori Society
  • Toolkit for downloading – how to do your ‘pepeha’

You’ll finish this course with a basic understanding of what makes up traditional and contemporary Māori society and how you can introduce yourself appropriately using a Māori pepeha framework.

MODULE 2

Treaty of Waitangi

Understanding the Treaty of  Waitangi and how it relates to Māori health is important for health workers in Aotearoa New Zealand. This module presents easy to understand content on the context behind the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (the why) and what is actually included in the Treaty of  Waitangi (the what)  :

  • The why
  • The what

You’ll finish this course with an ability to explain the factors that led to the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, how the English and Māori texts of the Treaty of Waitangi differ and why there are Treaty principles.

MODULE 3

Colonisation

Colonisation is a basic determinant of health and a core process that has contributed to Māori Health inequities.  In this lesson, you’ll:

  • Understand the basics (of colonisation)

You’ll finish this course with an understanding of four key mechanisms associated with the process of colonisation and how this relates to Māori health.

MODULE 4

Equity

Many people use the term equity, but struggle to understand how this relates to Māori health or how to ensure they are doing equity effectively . In this course, you’ll learn about:

  • Understanding equity
  • Equity ‘need’ and ‘rights’
  • Doing equity

You’ll finish this course with an understanding of equity as a concept, how equity reflects both Māori needs and rights and what you need to action in order to ‘do equity’ within your own professional practice.

MODULE 5

Cultural Competency versus Cultural Safety

Cultural competency and cultural safety are related but different concepts. In this course, you’ll learn the basics associated with:

  • Cultural competency
  • Cultural safety

You’ll finish this course with an understanding of cultural competency and how this differs from cultural safety. The risks of taking a cultural competency, rather than a cultural safety approach, will be explored.

MODULE 6

Being Anti-racist

Racism (similar to colonisation) is a basic determinant of health. It is important for health workers to have an understanding of this concept and how it relates to Māori health. Equally important, is the role that privilege (the flipside of racism) plays in health inequities  In this course, you’ll learn about:

  • Defining racism
  • Racism and health
  • Privilege - the flipside of racism 

You’ll finish this course with an understanding of how to define racism, how racism and privilege relate to Māori health inequities and what you need to do in order to become anti-racist in your own professional practice.

I was 10 years old when I decided I wanted to become a Māori doctor. Since then, I've  specialised in Public Health Medicine and had an extensive academic career as an Associate Professor teaching, researching and advocating for Māori health. I'm now ready to share my knowledge with as many people as possible. I'm very excited to present my first online course that aims to provide health workers with the basics.
